Iceberg of Culture

As someone who has grown up across different cultures, thinking about cultural norms, values, and unspoken differences has always been second nature to me – I’m very privileged to have it be a part of my lived experience. 🌏✨

Facilitating the Iceberg of Culture activity during our inclusive education training was a powerful moment. We explored how only around 10% of a person’s culture is visible, like language, clothing, food. But beneath the surface lies so much more: beliefs, communication styles, values, and expectations.

This matters. Often, the way we engage with one another isn’t personal, it’s cultural. When we misunderstand someone’s behavior or communication by our own invisible iceberg, it can lead to judgements and tension that aren’t beneficial for anyone.

By unpacking the hidden layers, we build empathy,
reduce assumptions,
and create space for deeper understanding.

Culture is so important, and yet I have observed that its role in shaping how we view the world and its differences are often not spoken about enough in diverse spaces. Recognising and celebrating these differences is essential in creating environments where people feel safe, heard, and comfortable.
