What would we be without the teachers who helped us become who we are?
Today is Teachers’ Day and I would love to take a moment to recognise the people who do far more than teach a subject.
A great teacher can spark curiosity, build confidence, notice potential, and create a sense of possibility. They can help us understand not only what we are learning, but also how to think, collaborate, take risks, recover from mistakes, and find our place in the world.
Even reading that, I bet you had someone in mind that shaped you to be the person you are today.
Feel free to share your story if you’d like to!
For me, mine was without a doubt Bryan Lee. He was my drama teacher, and he had such a profound impact on me that I eventually chose drama as my career. He pushed us to attend ISTA – Global Learning Through the Arts festivals, and now I am so deeply honored to serve on the ISTA board.
That is the power teachers have. A lesson can become an ‘aha’ moment. A classroom can become a place where someone discovers a voice they didn’t know they had. A teacher’s encouragement can stay with us for years.
I’m grateful not only to be surrounded by teachers, but also to be one! How cool that I get to support other educators and learners through drama, creativity, participation, and embodied learning.
To all the teachers who show up, make space, encourage curiosity, and believe in their students: THANK YOU! 🎭
The photo was of my very first class as a teacher, teaching drama at a performing arts centre in Shanghai, China back in 2019. Time flies!
