Bansko Nomad Fest Day 2: Your Uniqueness is Your Superpower

Bansko Nomad Fest day two, and my key takeaway was: ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ.

The session that resonated with me most today was Piera Mattioliโ€™s talk on online collaboration through participatory design.

In meetings, online or in person, there are often voices that donโ€™t get heard. Maybe people need more time to find their words, or other voices naturally take up more space. This is something weโ€™ve also discussed with Julia Slay in her trainings.

What I appreciated in Pieraโ€™s talk was the reminder that inclusion starts in the design process, not just in the final workshop or experience. Itโ€™s about making sure every voice is considered from the beginning.

Itโ€™s always inspiring to see how other facilitators approach participatory design. It gives me more tools to use, and itโ€™s also encouraging to see people doing the work to make space for everyoneโ€™s voice.

A simple tip to share for inclusive design: give multiple ways to engage.

Not just speaking.

Write in the chat.

Write on a sticky note.

Talk in pairs first.

Use a time limit for sharing.

So many simple ways to design for inclusion.

A few other reflections from day 2:

โ€ข Anna (Ania) Esipova human-centered sales session was a strong reminder to lead with who you are, not just what youโ€™re selling.

โ€ข Alison Grรผnโ€˜s talk on how your unique passion (in her case, motorcycle riding!) can empower local communities and women during travel.

โ€ข Tim Chimoyโ€™s talk made me reflect on freedom, movement, and whether we become lonelier as we become more mobile.

Iโ€™m really enjoying the diversity of the talks. Sad to have missed some of the unconferences, like Andreea Rusuโ€™s on traveling through the coliving community and Yeji Cheonโ€™s on nonviolent communication, but thereโ€™s still more to come in the days ahead.
